Breastfeeding – Expressing and storing breast milk

We get a lot of questions about how to store breast milk. How long does it last in the fridge? Should I store it in the fridge or freezer? How long can I keep it out at room temperature?

The link below offers the very latest guidance from The Breastfeeding Network on expressing and storing milk. You can print it off and keep it handy.

One tip we would add is that if you are using bags to store your milk in the freezer place them in a plastic container (such as an empty ice cream carton). This ensures they aren’t damaged through being knocked about in the freezer, so hopefully no leaks when you defrost  the milk.
